Cronologia
Biografia
Gamera is a giant flying turtle kaiju standing 60 meters tall and weighing 80 metric tons, renowned across generations as Earth's valiant guardian and the ultimate 'Friend of All Children.' Walking upright on his hind legs, Gamera features dark green skin, two sharp tusks protruding upward from his lower jaw, and a massive dome-shaped shell.
By retracting his head, limbs, and tail into his shell, he can emit rocket-like flames to achieve atmospheric and space flight. Initially portrayed as a destructive force upon his awakening, Gamera quickly revealed a protective nature, routinely going out of his way to rescue young children from harm.
Over the decades, Gamera's mission expanded from defending Japan to shielding the entire planet from rogue kaiju, alien armadas, and cosmic threats. Throughout his long history, Gamera has stood firm as humanity's defender. Whether battling supersonic monsters like Gyaos or sacrificing himself to destroy alien invaders like Zanon, Gamera remains a symbol of selfless protection and hope for Earth's younger generations.
Storia
Gamera's ancient origins trace back thousands of years. In ancient times, the civilization of Atlantis engineered or encountered Gamera, but later trapped him in Arctic ice for 8,000 years to prevent him from consuming their vital thermal energy.
Indigenous Inuit populations preserved memories of the creature in folklore, carving depictions of the flying turtle and passing down legends of 'The Devil's Envoy.' In 1965, an aircraft carrying nuclear weapons crashed in the Arctic, triggering an atomic detonation that shattered the ice sheet and reawakened Gamera.
Driven by an intense hunger for electricity and thermal energy after his long slumber, Gamera initially rampaged across Japan before establishing himself as humanity's defender against predatory monsters.
I PEZZI DI GAMERA
Evoluzione
Gamera's character has undergone dynamic transformations since his 1965 debut. In the Showa era (1965–1980), Gamera shifted from a menacing nuclear-awakened menace into the heroic 'Friend of All Children,' adopting lighthearted, family-friendly tones and saucer-like flying maneuvers. The Heisei trilogy (1995–1999), directed by Shusuke Kaneko with special effects by Shinji Higuchi, completely revitalized the franchise.
Gamera was re-imagined as an ancient bio-engineered weapon crafted by Atlantis to balance Earth's Mana against ecological disasters. This era brought sharp, imposing visual designs and serious eco-critical themes. Modern iterations—including 2006's *Gamera the Brave* featuring young Toto, and 2023's 3DCG series *GAMERA -Rebirth-*—continue to bridge his classic role as a protector of youth with cutting-edge visual effects.
Da Collezione
Gamera is a cornerstone property for kaiju figure collectors. Vintage soft vinyl (sofubi) figures from the original Showa era remain prized collectibles, while high-end action figures from Bandai's S.H.MonsterArts and Revoltech Kaiyodo lines offer unmatched articulation and screen accuracy. High-end display statues produced by X-Plus and Prime 1 Studio serve as centerpieces for premium monster collections.
Collector activity reached major highlights during the 60th-anniversary celebrations (1965–2025). The home media market saw high-end Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray sets released in late November 2025, featuring 4K digital restorations supervised by Shinji Higuchi and Shunichi Ogura. In March 2026, the complete *GAMERA -Rebirth-* Blu-ray BOX set was released. Furthermore, preserved screen-used props, suit parts, and puppets from *Gamera 3* and *Gamera the Brave* were showcased at the Gamera EXPO and Wonder Festival 2026 Summer in collaboration with ATAC.

Gamera's name combines the Japanese word for turtle ('kame') with the kaiju suffix 'ra', altering 'k' to 'g' so it wouldn't sound like 'camera'.
