Edward 'Eddie' Munson is introduced in 1986 as an eccentric senior at Hawkins High School, a drug dealer, lead guitarist for the heavy metal band Corroded Coffin, and the charismatic Dungeon Master of The Hellfire Club. Resented by school authorities and popular athletes for his rebellious nature, Eddie takes younger outcasts like Dustin Henderson, Mike Wheeler, and Lucas Sinclair under his wing.
Eddie's life turns upside down on March 21, 1986, when cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham is brutally killed by the supernatural entity Vecna inside Eddie's trailer. Fearing he will be blamed due to the town's rising 'Satanic Panic' regarding Dungeons & Dragons, Eddie flees into hiding.
He is soon located by Dustin, Max, Steve, and Robin, who reveal the existence of the Upside Down and help protect him from an angry town mob led by Jason Carver. Determined to stop running away from danger, Eddie actively participates in the Party's plan to defeat Vecna. On March 27, 1986, Eddie plays a heroic guitar rendition of Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' on his trailer roof in the Upside Down to draw away a swarm of Demobats. He ultimately sacrifices his life to protect Dustin and buy time for his friends, dying in Dustin's arms as an unsung hero framed by Hawkins as 'Eddie the Banished'.
Backstory
Eddie Munson was born between 1966 and 1969 (with his grave marker indicating 1966). His mother, Elizabeth, died of illness when he was six years old. His father, Alan 'Al' Munson, was involved in criminal schemes and taught Eddie how to hotwire vehicles before eventually being sent to prison.
Following his father's incarceration, Eddie was taken in by his paternal uncle, Wayne Munson, living in a trailer at Forest Hills Trailer Park. During his middle school years in the late 1970s, Eddie formed the rock band Corroded Coffin with his close friend Ronnie Ecker.
Upon entering Hawkins High School, Eddie struggled academically and was held back multiple years by Principal Higgins due to poor grades and non-conformity. In 1978, Eddie joined The Hellfire Club under previous leader Kenny, playing a half-orc fighter named Relgar the Bloodied, and took over as club president in 1979. By 1984, as detailed in the novel Flight of Icarus, Eddie harbored intense ambitions to break out of Hawkins with Corroded Coffin.

Eddie Munson begins his arc using a loud, theatrical metalhead persona to shield himself from social rejection and bullying. Proudly wearing the title of 'freak,' he creates a welcoming haven for outcasts through The Hellfire Club. Despite his defiant front, Eddie harbors deep insecurity over failing to graduate high school and reflexively flees from physical danger.
When Chrissy is murdered in front of him, Eddie's initial instinct is sheer terror and flight, leaving him plagued by survivor's guilt. Throughout his time hiding from the authorities and Jason's mob, Eddie admits his fear to Dustin and Steve, viewing himself as a coward who always runs when things get tough. During the final battle against Vecna in the Upside Down, Eddie makes a conscious decision to stand his ground. By cutting the rope tethering him to safety and drawing the Demobats toward himself, Eddie evolves from a terrified runaway into a heroic figure who willingly lays down his life for his friends.
