Cronologia
Biografia
Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is a brilliant, megalomaniacal scientist who serves as the overarching villain of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Characterized by his round torso, lack of a visible neck, bright red nose, bushy mustache, and navy pince-nez glasses, Eggman commands vast armies of robotic Badniks and flying superfortresses.
His ultimate ambition is world domination and the creation of "Eggmanland," a mechanical paradise built upon the subjugation of nature and organic life. Despite his tyrannical goals, Eggman's plans are routinely thwarted by his arch-nemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog, alongside Tails, Knuckles, and their allies.
To achieve his ends, Eggman frequently seeks out the seven Chaos Emeralds, constructs massive orbital battle stations like the Death Egg, or attempts to harness primordial entities such as Chaos and Dark Gaia. While arrogant and theatrical, Eggman is not entirely without nuance. He exhibits a complex sense of personal pride, occasionally forming reluctant alliances with Sonic when greater cosmic threats endanger the planet he intends to rule himself. In recent storylines, he has even shown rare paternal affection for his artificial intelligence creation, Sage.
Storia
Dr. Eggman was created by SEGA developers Naoto Ohshima, Hirokazu Yasuhara, and Yuji Naka, debuting in 1991.
Canonically, he is the grandson of Professor Gerald Robotnik, the legendary research scientist responsible for founding Space Colony ARK and creating Shadow the Hedgehog, as well as the cousin of Maria Robotnik. In original Japanese media, he was named Dr.
Eggman from his inception, whereas Western localizations initially renamed him Dr. Ivo Robotnik. SEGA resolved this naming dichotomy in 1998's Sonic Adventure, establishing "Robotnik" as his official family surname and "Eggman" as a taunting nickname bestowed by Sonic that the doctor eventually embraced. Alternate continuities provide varying origins, such as Fleetway comics' Dr. Ovi Kintobor—a kindly scientist turned evil after a laboratory accident with a rotten egg—and the Sonic X anime, where he originated on Earth before being transported to Sonic's dimension.
I PEZZI DI DR. EGGMAN
Evoluzione
Over more than three decades, Dr. Eggman has evolved from a classic 16-bit video game villain into a complex, multi-faceted pop culture icon. Originally conceived as a rotund mad scientist trapping forest animals inside robotic Badniks, his aesthetic and presence underwent a major modernization in 1998's Sonic Adventure. This era unified his international branding, refined his visual design with long red coats and flight goggles, and raised the stakes of his schemes from localized base-building to world-shattering catastrophes. Media adaptations have further broadened his persona.
In 1990s television, he ranged from the comedic slapstick antagonist of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog to the dark, tyrannical dictator of SatAM. In the 2020s live-action cinematic universe, Jim Carrey brought an energetic, unhinged performance that re-energized public interest in the character. Narratively, Eggman's characterization reached new depth in 2022's Sonic Frontiers. The introduction of the AI character Sage showcased a rare paternal affection and emotional vulnerability, transforming him from a purely megalomaniacal villain into a surprisingly sympathetic father figure without sacrificing his core drive for robotic domination.
Da Collezione
For high-end collectors, Dr. Eggman represents one of SEGA's most sought-after villain figures. Unlike protagonist Sonic, who receives endless mass-market merchandise, premium Eggman collectibles are rarer and highly prized. Leading the high-end market is First 4 Figures, renowned for crafting intricate, large-scale resin statues featuring Eggman in his signature Egg Mobile or alongside his classic Death Egg mecha designs. These limited-edition statues regularly command top dollar among serious statue enthusiasts.
In the action figure space, manufacturers like Resaurus set early standards during the late 1990s with their Sonic Adventure line, which remain holy grail items on the secondary market today. Modern collectors frequently target articulated releases from Jakks Pacific, as well as stylized Nendoroid figures from Good Smile Company. Vintage 1990s merchandise, convention exclusives, and factory-sealed mecha playsets continue to show strong value appreciation. Fueled by the box-office success of the live-action film franchise and nostalgic demand from lifelong fans, high-grade Eggman collectibles remain consistent performers in the aftermarket.

Actor Jim Carrey portrayed both Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his grandfather Professor Gerald Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).
