Cronologia
Biografia

John Dee, operating as Doctor Destiny, is a supervillain in the DC Universe.
First introduced as a rogue criminal scientist fighting the Justice League, Dee evolved into a dark, reality-warping menace centered around dreams and nightmares.
His core role spans from Silver Age Justice League conflicts to Vertigo's mature comic realm in Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, where he used cosmic artifacts to terrorize mortals. He frequently operates out of Arkham Asylum or aligns with villain teams like the Secret Society of Super Villains.
Storia

John Dee began his villainous career using high-tech inventions, including an anti-gravity device and a will-deadening beam, to capture Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and infiltrate the Justice League. He later created the Materioptikon, a device capable of turning dreams and nightmares into physical reality.
To stop him, the Justice League hypnotized Dee so he could no longer sleep or dream. The resulting extreme dream deprivation degraded his mind and withered his body into a skeletal, Grim Reaper-like appearance before his imprisonment at Arkham Asylum.
Later lore expanded his backstory, revealing his mother to be Ethel Cripps (former mistress of occultist Roderick Burgess). She gifted him Morpheus's stolen Dreamstone (Ruby), which Dee modified to power his Materioptikon. In Neil Gaiman's '24 Hours' arc, Dee escaped Arkham and used the Dreamstone to manipulate patrons in a 24-hour diner before Morpheus reclaimed the ruby and restored Dee's ability to dream.

Evoluzione
Doctor Destiny began in 1961 as a standard Silver Age mad scientist equipped with anti-gravity and will-deadening gadgetry. His narrative took a permanent shift after his sleep deprivation at the hands of the Justice League transformed him into a skeletal figure residing in Arkham Asylum.
In 1989, writer Neil Gaiman shifted the character into the Vertigo universe via The Sandman, tying his technology directly to cosmic lore and Morpheus's Dreamstone. Subsequent reboots, such as The New 52 and the Dawn of DC initiative, expanded his background to include deep ties to ancient sorcery, Madame Xanadu, and global nightmare-crossover events like Knight Terrors.

Actor David Thewlis portrayed John Dee in Netflix's live-action adaptation of The Sandman.
