DONKEY KONG
Donkey Kong is one of Nintendo’s most iconic and longest-running video game characters, created in 1981 by Shigeru Miyamoto. Originally starting as an arcade antagonist, the character was famously redesigned in 1994 by Rareware with his signature red necktie, evolving into the heroic, banana-loving leader of the Kong Family.
Cronologia
Biografia
Donkey Kong is the heroic leader of the Kong Family and the primary protagonist of the Donkey Kong franchise.
Characterized by his massive build, immense physical strength, and signature red necktie, DK resides on Donkey Kong Island inside his treehouse, guarding his prized Banana Hoard alongside his nephew and sidekick, Diddy Kong.
DK plays the central heroic role across numerous adventures, most notably battling King K. Rool and the reptilian Kremling Krew to recover his stolen banana hoards. Guided by his grandfather Cranky Kong and supported by allies like Funky Kong, Candy Kong, and various Animal Buddies, Donkey Kong protects his island home while expanding into platformers, tactical battles, rhythm games, and major crossover tournaments.
Storia
Donkey Kong debuted in the 1981 arcade classic Donkey Kong, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, where he originally served as an obstacle-hurling antagonist keeping Jumpman (Mario) away from Pauline.
In official Nintendo canon, that original 1981 arcade gorilla eventually grew old and became Cranky Kong. The modern Donkey Kong—distinguished by his red necktie—was introduced in Rareware's 1994 Super Nintendo title Donkey Kong Country.
Canonically, modern DK is the grandson (and in early manuals, son) of the 1981 arcade original. When King K. Rool's Kremling minions overpowered Diddy Kong and stole DK's entire Banana Hoard, Cranky awakened Donkey Kong, launching him on a quest across Kongo Jungle, Gorilla Glacier, and Chimp Caverns to reclaim his treasure.

Evoluzione
Donkey Kong's journey across four decades represents one of video gaming's most celebrated transformations. Debuting in 1981 as a pixelated arcade antagonist throwing barrels at Jumpman, DK was completely reinvented in 1994 by Rareware. Utilizing advanced Silicon 3D Graphics pre-rendered into 16-bit SNES sprites for Donkey Kong Country, Rare established modern DK with his signature red tie, expanded his extended family, and turned him into a primary protagonist.
As hardware evolved, DK successfully bridged the shift into full 3D platforming with Donkey Kong 64 (1999) before entering an experimental phase in the mid-2000s, featuring rhythm platformers powered by DK Bongo controllers. Retro Studios restored the franchise's hardcore 2D platforming heritage with Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010) and Tropical Freeze (2014). In recent years, DK has evolved into a global multimedia icon, spanning computer-animated television, feature films voiced by Seth Rogen, dedicated Universal Studios theme park lands, and destruction-based 3D platformers on modern Nintendo hardware.

A standout centerpiece for modern display is the official LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade Set (releasing August 2026), a 1,367-piece building set designed specifically to honor the character's 1980s arcade origin.
Vintage collectors active in the secondary market heavily target original 1980s Game & Watch handheld LCD units, classic physical SNES and Game Boy Advance ROM cartridges, and unlockable sticker prints created via the Game Boy Printer from Donkey Kong Country GBC releases. Unique hardware peripherals like the GameCube DK Bongos, combined with physical memorabilia from Universal Studios' Super Nintendo World: Donkey Kong Country expansions, remain top choices for complete franchise collectors.
