The Dark Trooper is a line of advanced Imperial heavy infantry, battle droids, and powered exoskeletons designed to give the Galactic Empire an overwhelming tactical advantage.
Originally conceived by General Rom Mohc aboard his secret factory ship, the Arc Hammer, the project aimed to replace fragile stormtroopers with heavily armored, high-powered cybernetic and automated soldiers.
Encased in lightsaber-resistant metal and equipped with jump packs and heavy assault weapons, Dark Troopers were deployed to drop behind enemy lines and crush Rebel resistance. In the Star Wars narrative, Dark Troopers served as terrifying shock troops. In Legends, they slaughtered the Rebel garrison at Tak Base before mercenary Kyle Katarn was tasked by Mon Mothma with destroying the project and killing General Mohc. In Disney Canon, early DT-series sentry droids served as precursors until Imperial remnant leader Moff Gideon deployed third-generation autonomous Dark Troopers aboard his light cruiser, proving so formidable that only Jedi Master Luke Skywalker could halt their assault.

The origins of the Dark Trooper program trace back to before the Battle of Yavin aboard the Empirical research station. Using cybernetic technology similar to that which sustained Darth Vader, the Empire transformed aging Clone Wars clone veterans into Phase Zero Dark Troopers. General Rom Mohc, who favored close-quarters infantry combat over superweapons like the Death Star, oversaw this initiative.
Although Phase Zero was eventually shut down as the Empire phased out clone soldiers, its battle effectiveness convinced Mohc to pursue a fully realized Dark Trooper Project.
Manufacturing of the advanced droids required specialized planetary supply chains: phrikite metal was mined on Gromas 16, phrik alloys were tested on Fest and refined at Ice Station Beta on Anteevy, and custom weaponry was created by Moff Rebus. Units were stored aboard the mobile Arc Hammer and launched to planetary targets via specialized hyperspace pods. Following the destruction of the Arc Hammer by Kyle Katarn, Emperor Palpatine withdrew official funding for Imperial battle droids, though surviving dark troopers remained deployed on worlds like Kessel, Felucia, and Coruscant, as well as guarding Darth Vader's fortress on Vjun.

The concept of the Dark Trooper has undergone significant structural evolution across two distinct continuity tracks. In Legends, the project evolved chronologically from cybernetic humans to complete exo-suits: Phase Zero converted aging Clone Wars veterans into cyborgs; Phase I introduced lightsaber-resistant skeletal droids; Phase II perfected the jump-pack jetpack and assault cannon droid unit; and Phase III culminated in a massive wearable powered exosuit worn by General Rom Mohc.
In Disney Canon, this design progression was inverted. Precursor DT-series sentry droids appeared early during the Imperial era in Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Later, Imperial remnant leader Moff Gideon and Dr. Pershing eliminated human pilots entirely to produce third-generation autonomous battle droids in The Mandalorian. Gideon eventually took the concept full circle by creating a personal, wearable Next-Generation Dark Trooper suit forged from pure Mandalorian beskar alloy.

For tabletop gamers and figure collectors, Dark Troopers hold a distinct place across physical gaming platforms. In tactical miniatures, Phase III Dark Troopers originally made an impact in the Star Wars Miniatures line, equipped with shoulder-mounted missile launchers.
Tabletop strategy collectors saw a major modern addition on February 17, 2023, when Atomic Mass Games released the official Dark Troopers Unit Expansion for Star Wars: Legion. This physical expansion brought Moff Gideon's Phase III battle droids to the tabletop complete with XS-IV Assault Cannons and SM-9 Frag Launchers, establishing them as a premier heavy unit for Imperial army builders.
Dark Troopers were originally created for the 1995 video game Star Wars: Dark Forces as an alternative to destroying another Death Star.
