Biografia

Clayface is a legacy supervillain mantle in Gotham City, primarily known as one of Batman's most destructive metahuman foes.
While the identity originated with a non-powered human murderer, it quickly became defined by tragic individuals transformed into pliable, malleable mud-like monsters.
Multiple individuals have adopted the moniker across DC Comics history, most notably former B-list actor Basil Karlo and treasure hunter Matt Hagen. Driven insane by physical deformities, radioactive protoplasm, or experimental chemical procedures, figures bearing the Clayface name frequently terrorize Gotham. Despite their villainous reputation, certain incarnations—such as Basil Karlo during the DC Rebirth era—have sought redemption, temporarily aligning with Batman and his crime-fighting allies.
Storia

The origin of Clayface began with Basil Karlo, a B-list horror actor who lost his mind upon learning that his classic film, *Dread Castle*, was being remade without him.
Adopting the costume and identity of the film's villain, "Clayface," Karlo began murdering the remake's cast members in the order of their onscreen deaths.
Decades later, treasure hunter Matt Hagen discovered a pool of glowing radioactive protoplasm in a cave, granting him the ability to physically shape-shift his body into living clay. Seeking a cure for hyperpituitarism, scientist Preston Payne injected himself with Hagen's blood, mutating into a melting, corrosive monster who required a specialized exoskeleton suit. Additional mantle holders include Strike Force Kobra agent Sondra Fuller (Lady Clay), her metahuman son Cassius Payne, DEO scientist Peter Malley (Claything), wounded veteran Todd Russell, and Gotham firefighter Johnny Williams.

Evoluzione
Clayface has undergone one of the most drastic evolutions of any villain in Batman's rogue gallery. In 1940, creators Bob Kane and Bill Finger introduced Basil Karlo as a non-superpowered, masked serial killer operating in Gotham's theater district. The Silver Age completely redefined the moniker in 1961 with Matt Hagen, introducing metahuman shapeshifting powers gained through radioactive protoplasm.
During the Bronze and Modern Ages, DC Comics deepened the body horror elements of the character. Preston Payne introduced excruciating physical melting, requiring an exoskeleton and corrosive contact to survive. Later storylines created an interconnected family of Clayfaces, including Sondra Fuller and Cassius Payne, before Basil Karlo stole their combined abilities in the 1989 "Mud Pack" arc to become the Ultimate Clayface. Modern adaptations span from lighthearted theatrical comedy in animated series to R-rated body horror tragedies in cinema.
