BISHOP
Bishop (Hyperdyne Systems Model 341-B) is a synthetic 'artificial person' and Executive Officer assigned as a technician and science officer to the United States Colonial Marines aboard the USS Sulaco. Portrayed primarily by actor Lance Henriksen, Bishop is celebrated for his strict empathetic programming, non-violent core directives, and self-sacrificing actions during the LV-426 mission.
Cronologia
Biography
Bishop was assigned under military and corporate regulations to the United States Colonial Marines aboard the USS Sulaco as Executive Officer, technician, and Science Officer during the investigation of the Hadley's Hope colony on LV-426. Upon waking from hypersleep, Bishop attempted to build rapport with the crew, eventually demonstrating his rapid synthetic reflexes in a famous knife trick with Private Hudson.
Ellen Ripley initially treated him with intense hostility due to her previous trauma with the traitorous synthetic Ash, despite Bishop's assurances that his newer Model 341-B line possessed strict behavioral inhibitors prohibiting harm to humans. After descending to Hadley's Hope in the APC, Bishop analyzed facility logs and medical records in the colony med lab, taking a scientific interest in dissecting dead Facehugger specimens.
As the colony's Atmosphere Processor neared catastrophic failure, Bishop volunteered to embark on a dangerous solo mission across the surface, unarmed, to remote-pilot a reserve dropship. He successfully retrieved Ripley and Newt just before the reactor detonated, finally earning Ripley's trust and respect. Upon returning to the USS Sulaco, Bishop was ambushed, impaled, and torn in half by the stowaway Xenomorph Queen. Despite sustaining critical structural damage, he managed to secure Newt to prevent her from being blown out into space when Ripley opened the cargo airlock. Placed into hypersleep, Bishop sustained further irreparable damage during the EEV crash on Fiorina 'Fury' 161. Ripley briefly reactivated his salvaged remains in a scrapyard to access flight recorder data regarding the Xenomorph on board. After confirming the details, Bishop requested to be permanently disconnected rather than live in a degraded state.
Backstory
The Hyperdyne Systems Model 341-B synthetic line was designed by Weyland-Yutani Director of Special Projects Michael Bishop (also known as 'Bishop II'), who sculpted the androids' appearance after his own face.
In broader franchise history, this physical likeness traces back to Charles Bishop Weyland, the billionaire founder and CEO of Weyland Industries in the early 2000s who led an Antarctic expedition.
Prior to his deployment aboard the USS Sulaco, Bishop's early activation, diagnostic testing, and initial field assignments alongside other synthetics named after chess pieces were documented in diagnostic archives.
I PEZZI DI BISHOP
Evolution
Bishop represents a major evolutionary shift for synthetics within the Alien universe. While the original film introduced Ash as a covert, treacherous corporate agent, Aliens introduced Bishop to subvert expectations. Through genuine empathy, complete non-violence, and heroism—volunteering for a suicide mission to remote-pilot a dropship and saving Newt despite being torn in half—Bishop redefined artificial humans as trustworthy allies.
In Alien 3, his brief reactivation highlighted his quiet dignity, choosing permanent deactivation over existing as a degraded, non-state-of-the-art unit. Across expanded media, including William Gibson's Alien 3 script adaptations and T.R. Napper's novel Aliens: Bishop, his legacy evolved further: his physical template expanded into historical figures like Charles Bishop Weyland, while his memory core became a central artifact in the ongoing struggle over Weyland-Yutani bio-weapons research.
Collecting
For dedicated Alien franchise collectors, Bishop represents one of sci-fi cinema's most celebrated synthetic characters. His premier action figure release was produced by Kenner Products during the early 1990s as part of their official Aliens toy line.
The vintage Kenner Bishop figure came packaged with the Aliens: Space Marines mini-comic titled 'Aliens: Desert Storm'. Collectibles highlighting Bishop's key moments—particularly his famous knife trick hands and his bisected battle damage from the Xenomorph Queen encounter—remain popular historical centerpieces for fans of military science fiction merchandise.

Lance Henriksen practiced extensively with real knives for the knife trick scene, performing the stunt on camera before select shots were sped up for effect.
