Over his career, Hank has served as a member of the X-Men, Avengers, Champions, Defenders, X-Factor, Illuminati, and X-Force, dedicating his life to mutant rights and scientific research. Separately in Marvel Comics lore, 'The Beast' (also known as Krahllak) refers to an ancient demonic entity worshiped by the Hand ninja clan. This entity manipulates events from the shadows and periodically possesses mortal hosts, such as Daredevil during the Shadowland crisis and Frank Castle (the Punisher) as the Fist of the Beast.

Hank McCoy was born a mutant with oversized hands and feet that gave him extraordinary athletic capabilities, though he initially appeared human.
While working as a research scientist for the Brand Corporation, Hank synthesized a chemical serum to induce temporary mutation.
However, after delaying taking the antidote, he permanently mutated into a gray-furred, fanged form in Amazing Adventures #11 (1972), which turned blue in Amazing Adventures #15. In contrast, the ancient demonic Beast dates back four billion years to Earth's prehistory, where a cabal known as the Sickly Ones worshiped the demon to dishonor creation through destruction. Cults dedicated to this demonic Beast maintained his worship through the Thurian and Hyborian Ages at the Temple of the Beast.

Hank McCoy's character arc is defined by physical mutations and moral shifts. Debuting in 1963 as a human mutant with oversized hands and feet, his 1972 self-experimentation permanently transformed him into a gray-furred, fanged simian form, which soon mutated into blue fur.
In 2001 (New X-Men #114), Hank underwent a secondary mutation into a feline form, and later in 2014 (All-New X-Men #20), mutated further into an ape/gorilla-like form. Morally, Beast transitioned from a jovial, cultured scholar into an increasingly utilitarian strategist. During the Krakoan era (2019–2024) as head of X-Force, Hank embraced ruthless surveillance and unethical cloning. Following the death of 'Beast Prime' in 2024, a restored, heroic clone backed up prior to his moral corruption rejoined Cyclops's team in Alaska during the 'From the Ashes' era.
The demonic Beast entity once possessed Daredevil during Shadowland and later granted demonic powers to the Punisher as the Fist of the Beast.
