Cronologia
Biografia

Batgirl represents high-tech intelligence, courage, and tactical martial arts expertise within Gotham City.
While several women have carried the moniker throughout DC continuity, the role consistently defines a hero who fights crime alongside Batman while establishing her own fiercely independent legacy. Beyond her superhero mantle, Batgirl plays a crucial role in the broader superhero community.
Whether operating as Gotham's acrobatic guardian or as Oracle—the elite hacker and intelligence broker who founded the Birds of Prey—she serves as a strategic cornerstone for the Batman Family and DC's heroes. Across modern eras, Batgirl has evolved from a solo vigilante into a central figure of generational heroism. Today, the mantle encompasses a legacy shared by multiple heroes, including Barbara Gordon, Cassandra Cain, and Stephanie Brown, who frequently work together to safeguard Gotham.
Storia

The Batgirl mantle originated in 1961 with Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' Kane, introduced in Batman #139 by Bill Finger and Sheldon Moldoff as a sidekick to Kathy Kane's Batwoman. However, the modern and definitive Batgirl debuted in 1967 in Detective Comics #359.
Created by Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino in collaboration with TV producer William Dozier, Barbara Gordon—daughter of GCPD Police Commissioner James Gordon—made her iconic arrival in 'The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!'. Barbara served as Gotham's hero throughout the Bronze Age until 1988's Batgirl Special #1, where she retired.
Later that year, in Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's landmark graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke, Barbara was shot and paralyzed by the Joker. Refusing to succumb to trauma, writers John Ostrander and Kim Yale reintroduced her in 1989's Suicide Squad #23 as Oracle, a elite computer hacker who became the digital nerve center for the superhero universe and co-founded the Birds of Prey in 1996. During 1999's Batman: No Man's Land storyline, Helena Bertinelli (Huntress) briefly wore the Batgirl costume before Batman passed the cowl to Cassandra Cain, a martial arts prodigy and daughter of assassins Lady Shiva and David Cain. Cassandra starred in Batgirl's first long-running ongoing title from 2000 to 2006. In 2009, Stephanie Brown (formerly Spoiler) assumed the mantle in Batgirl Vol. 3 under writer Bryan Q. Miller.

Evoluzione
Batgirl's character progression reflects major shifting eras in comic book publishing. Beginning in 1961 as Betty Kane, the role was reimagined in 1967 with Barbara Gordon, developed simultaneously alongside Yvonne Craig's iconic television portrayal in Batman's third season. Barbara represented a modern, independent working woman who fought crime on her own terms. Her trajectory dramatically shifted in 1988 following Alan Moore's Batman: The Killing Joke, where paralysis led to her reinvention as Oracle in 1989.
Rather than being sidelined, Oracle became one of DC's most powerful characters, heading the Birds of Prey and coordinating global superhero operations. The cowl subsequently evolved into a legacy mantle during 1999's No Man's Land, passing briefly to Helena Bertinelli and then to Cassandra Cain, who became the first Batgirl to star in an ongoing solo series. In 2009, Stephanie Brown assumed the mantle in a lighter, fan-favorite run. In 2011, DC's New 52 restored Barbara Gordon's mobility, leading into 2014's acclaimed 'Batgirl of Burnside' redesign. Recent eras have embraced a shared mantle concept in Batgirls (2021–2023), followed by Cassandra Cain starring in Batgirl Vol. 6 (2024–2026) and Barbara Gordon headlining the 2026 thriller DC Next Level: Barbara Gordon: Breakout.
