AZRAEL
Azrael is a vigilante mantle in DC Comics, most famously held by Jean-Paul Valley Jr. and later Michael Washington Lane. Genetically engineered and brainwashed by the Sacred Order of Saint Dumas via subconscious conditioning known as 'The System,' Jean-Paul initially served as an assassin before becoming an ally to Batman and briefly assuming the dark knight's cowl during the legendary Knightfall arc.
Cronologia
Biografia

Jean-Paul Valley Jr. was gestated within a laboratory vat by the Sacred Order of Saint Dumas, a rogue splinter sect of the Knights Templar, to succeed his father Ludovic as their elite enforcer, Azrael. Engineered using a corrupted Mother Box called the 'Angel Maker,' Jean-Paul was subjected from birth to intense hypnosis and operant conditioning known as 'The System.' This gave him subconscious martial knowledge and violent instincts while keeping his true identity hidden from him.
To protect him from the Order's cruelty, his father snuck him out of Europe to America, where Jean-Paul lived as an ordinary computer science student at Gotham University until Ludovic was mortally wounded by Order enforcers and passed down his legacy. Believing his father's final words were a command to join the Order, Jean-Paul traveled to the Alps to train under Nomoz, fully activating 'The System' and assuming the mantle of Azrael. Soon after meeting Bruce Wayne, Jean-Paul was chosen to replace Batman after Bane broke Bruce's back.
However, the violent conditioning of 'The System' took over, leading Jean-Paul to construct a heavily weaponized armor suit and act with extreme brutality until Bruce Wayne recovered and forcibly reclaimed the cowl. Following his downfall as Batman, Jean-Paul embarked on a long quest for redemption. He worked to dismantle the Order of St. Dumas, fought alongside Batman's Gotham Knights team, traveled into deep space with the Justice League Odyssey in the Ghost Sector, and worked as a hospice nurse in Gotham while trying to overcome his split personality and operate as a true 'Angel of Mercy.'
Storia

Jean-Paul Valley's origins are rooted in dark science and religious fanaticism. Created with the assistance of a mysterious figure known as Mother, he was gestated in a vat and connected to the 'Angel Maker,' an aggregate technology derived from a stolen Mother Box containing the knowledge of past Azraels.
Raised in an isolated all-boys priory school, he suffered constant physical and psychological abuse from monks designed to trigger 'The System' whenever he was in pain or angry, after which his memories of the torture were erased.
His father, Ludovic Valley, secretly cared for Jean-Paul and chose to sneak him out of the Order's Spanish monastery in Marbella to save him from a life of bloodshed. Ludovic sent Jean-Paul to the United States to live a normal life. Years later, after Ludovic betrayed the Order, assassins mortally wounded him. He bled out in Jean-Paul's college dormitory, revealing the legacy of Azrael to his son with his dying breath.
I PEZZI DI AZRAEL
Evoluzione
Created in 1992 by Dennis O'Neil, Joe Quesada, and Peter Milligan, Jean-Paul Valley transformed from a tragic, brainwashed assassin into a central figure of 1990s DC Comics. His dramatic escalation into an unstable, armored Batman during the Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd arcs explored the boundary between Bruce Wayne's morality and lethal antiheroism.
Following his defeat by Bruce Wayne, Azrael starred in his own 100-issue solo series, Azrael: Agent of the Bat, which tracked his long journey to break free from subconscious conditioning. The mantle expanded in 2009 with Michael Washington Lane wielding the Suit of Sorrows in Azrael: Death's Dark Knight. In the post-Flashpoint and Rebirth eras, Jean-Paul returned to main continuity as part of Batman's Gotham Knights team and joined the cosmic Justice League Odyssey. His evolution culminated in the 2022 Sword of Azrael series by Dan Watters, where Jean-Paul finally stopped viewing Azrael as an external persona, taking control of his own identity to become an 'Angel of Mercy.'
