Cronologia
Biografia
Major Arnold Ernst Toht is a ruthless Gestapo officer working for Nazi Germany's Third Reich Special Antiquities Collection. Known for his eerie, quiet whisper and dark leather trench coat, Toht is tasked in 1936 with recovering the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra to locate the Ark of the Covenant. He tracks archaeologist Indiana Jones to Patan, Nepal, where he corners Marion Ravenwood in her tavern, The Raven. When Marion refuses to yield the medallion, Toht prepares to torture her with a red-hot fireplace poker.
During the chaotic tavern brawl that ensues with Indy, Toht attempts to grab the burning medallion from the floor, accidentally searing its complex ancient markings onto the palm of his right hand before fleeing into the snow. Upon arriving in Tanis, Egypt, Toht presents his scarred hand to Colonel Herman Dietrich and French archaeologist René Belloq. The Nazis use the imprint on his palm to construct a crude, one-sided replica of the headpiece; however, because they lack the markings from the reverse side, they dig in the wrong location.
While at the excavation site, Toht continues his dark interrogation duties, menacing the captured Marion Ravenwood with a folding coat hanger masquerading as a garrote and expressing delight when she and Indy are sealed inside the Well of Souls. Toht accompanies Belloq and Dietrich to a secret island off Crete for the ceremonial opening of the Ark. Initially skeptical of the artifact's supernatural nature, Toht laughs mockingly when the Ark appears to contain only dust. His laughter quickly turns to terror when divine spirits erupt from the chest. In an iconic sequence of karma and special-effects history, holy fire engulfs the Nazis, liquefying Toht's face off his skull before incinerating his remains into a pile of ash.
Storia
Little is officially known regarding Arnold Ernst Toht's early years, other than that he had at least one sibling—a sister named Ilsa Toht, who also grew up to become a high-ranking agent of the Third Reich.
Toht joined the German secret police and received extensive training in combat, interrogation, torture, and espionage.
Well-versed in Nazi doctrine and Aryan mysticism, Toht rose through the ranks to become one of the Gestapo's top agents. Relishing the infliction of pain and believing all actions were justified to enforce Nazi supremacy, he operated under Adolf Hitler's direct orders to secure his prominent position in the Gestapo hierarchy.

Evoluzione
Major Arnold Ernst Toht was conceived in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark as a classic Gestapo villain archetype—soft-spoken, cold, and dressed in sinister black leather attire. In early script drafts, Toht was slated to die during a high-speed desert jeep chase; however, director Steven Spielberg decided to spare him for the climax, resulting in one of cinema's most famous special-effects moments as his face melted away. Over the decades, expanded media fleshed out Toht's character and lore.
Marvel Comics introduced his vengeful sister Ilsa in 1983 while formalizing his full name as Arnold Ernst Toht. Video games like LEGO Indiana Jones reinterpreted his terrifying persona with physical slapstick, having him burn his rear end instead of his palm. Despite limited screen time, Toht's iconic depiction by Ronald Lacey remains a defining benchmark for cinematic villains, directly influencing modern franchise characters like Mads Mikkelsen's Jürgen Voller in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).
