Biography
April O'Neil is the primary human companion and closest ally of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo).
Depending on the incarnation, she is depicted as a courageous news reporter, an expert computer programmer, a genetics intern, or a high school student.
Regardless of her profession, April consistently acts as the Turtles' bridge to the surface world, often taking on the role of a big sister or trusted confidante. Throughout her adventures, April is frequently drawn into the Turtles' ongoing struggle against Shredder, the Foot Clan, Baxter Stockman, and alien threats like the Kraang. She frequently partners with vigilante Casey Jones, her long-time romantic interest and eventual husband in several continuities. Whether hacking databases or fighting on the front lines, April remains an essential figure in the Ninja Turtles saga.
Backstory
Created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, April O'Neil made her first appearance in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 (1984) as a computer programmer working for Dr. Baxter Stockman.
After learning that Stockman was using his robot Mousers for criminal acts, April was cornered by the machines in a NYC subway before being saved by the Ninja Turtles. Following her rescue, she opened an antique shop called 'Second Time Around' and offered the Turtles a safe haven.
Later continuities reinterpreted her origin: in IDW Publishing's comics, she was a genetics student at StockGen Research who named the laboratory turtles prior to their mutation. In the 2012 animated series, her background introduced her as a human-Kraang mutant hybrid whose father, Kirby O'Neil, was abducted by aliens. In a surreal Mirage Vol. 4 origin twist, April discovered she was originally a drawing brought to life by a magic warp crystal pencil.

Evolution
April O'Neil has undergone remarkable transformations since her creation by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984. Originally depicted in Mirage Studios' black-and-white comic as a Caucasian computer programmer, her persona was dramatically reshaped for the 1987 animated series into a red-haired TV reporter wearing a signature yellow jumpsuit. This version cemented her image in popular culture for decades as the Turtles' spunky media connection. Over the years, her character shifted from a frequent damsel in distress to a capable warrior.
Archie Comics, the 2003 animated series, and the 2007 CGI film established her as a trained ninja student under Master Splinter. Modern reinventions continued to diversify her character: the 2012 series made her a teenage Kraang hybrid with psionic powers, while the 2018 Rise of the TMNT introduced an African-American teenage April wielding a baseball bat. In 2023's Mutant Mayhem, she became a relatable high school journalist, while darker alternate takes like The Last Ronin portray her as a veteran resistance leader with cybernetic prosthetics.
