Storia
The history of Square Enix stems from two legendary Japanese publishers. Enix Corporation was founded in 1975 by Yasuhiro Fukushima as Eidansha Fudosan Co., Ltd., a real-estate architectural firm, before being renamed Enix Corporation in 1982. Operating on an asset-light publishing model, Enix contracted external developers and released the original Dragon Quest in 1986. Square Co., Ltd.
originated in 1983 as the computer software division of Den-Yu-Sha, incorporating independently in 1986. In 1987, designer Hironobu Sakaguchi created Final Fantasy, establishing Square as an in-house RPG development powerhouse. On April 1, 2003, Enix officially absorbed Square Co., Ltd. in a corporate merger to form Square Enix Co., Ltd.
While Enix was the surviving corporate entity, former Square president Yoichi Wada assumed the presidency of the new company. Square Enix expanded its portfolio by acquiring arcade pioneer Taito Corporation in September 2005 and British publisher Eidos Interactive in April 2009. In October 2008, the company transitioned to a holding company structure under Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. In May 2022, Square Enix divested its Western development studios to Embracer Group to re-concentrate its resources on core Japanese IPs and global digital publishing.

Reputazione
Square Enix Merchandising holds a distinct reputation in the collectibles market by directly manufacturing figures based on its own iconic intellectual properties as well as licensed pop-culture brands. Collectors value lines such as Play Arts Kai and Bring Arts for their detailed paintwork, poseability, and signature stylized aesthetic.
The brand's expansion of Play Arts Kai to encompass licensed Western properties like DC Comics, Marvel, and Star Wars demonstrated its capability to reinvent major external IPs in its signature style. Furthermore, high-end collaborations such as the Square Enix Masterline with Prime 1 Studio have solidified Square Enix's standing in the ultra-premium statue market, while mascot plushies of Slime, Chocobo, and Moogle remain widely popular display pieces worldwide.

Square Enix operates its own manga publishing branch called Gangan Comics, which published hit series like Fullmetal Alchemist and Black Butler.
