Ursula is a villainous cecaelian sea witch from Disney's 1989 animated classic *The Little Mermaid*. Half-woman and half-octopus, she strikes devious deals with desperate merfolk from her lair in a leviathan skeleton, ultimately manipulating Princess Ariel to usurp King Triton's throne.

La Scena

La Scena

Ursula makes her signature appearance in her dark, secluded lair carved inside the skeleton of a leviathan. Surrounded by a garden of writhing, suffering polyps—merfolk who failed to fulfill their contractual bargains with her—Ursula plots her revenge against King Triton. Using her spy eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, she monitors Princess Ariel and exploits her deep desire to live in the human world. In her central dramatic sequence, Ursula sings 'Poor Unfortunate Souls,' offering Ariel a deal: three days as a human in exchange for her voice, stored inside a golden nautilus shell. Later in the story, Ursula adopts a human disguise named Vanessa to hypnotize Prince Eric on his ship and prevent the crucial true love's kiss. In the climax of the film, after seizing Triton's crown and trident, she transforms into a gargantuan ocean giant, wielding lightning and creating massive ocean whirlpools before being defeated.

Significato

Significato

Ursula serves as the primary catalyst and main antagonist of *The Little Mermaid*. Her banishment from Atlantica fuels a bitter vendetta against King Triton, prompting her to target his youngest daughter, Ariel. By enticing Ariel into an binding magical contract, Ursula exposes the vulnerability of Triton's reign and forces him to sacrifice his freedom to save his daughter's soul. Ursula's ruthless ambition briefly grants her total dominance over the ocean when she usurps the trident and crown. Beyond her role in the original 1989 animated feature, Ursula established a lasting archetype for Disney Villains, combining dark witchcraft, dramatic theatricality, and opportunistic trickery that has resonated across decades of Disney media, Broadway adaptations, and live-action reimaginings.

Design

Design

Ursula is designed as a plus-size cecaelia with light lavender skin, gray-streaked short white hair, dark eye makeup, aqua blue eyeshadow, deep red lipstick, and a beauty mark near her mouth. From the waist down, her body resembles a black dress formed by six muscular tentacles lined with violet suckers; combined with her two human arms, she has eight total limbs. She wears purple coral shell earrings and an enchanted gold nautilus shell necklace that traps Ariel's voice. When transforming into her human alter-ego, Vanessa, she takes on the appearance of a glamorous young woman with long dark brown hair, violet eyes, arched eyebrows, and outfits ranging from a periwinkle dress with a deep blue corset to an elaborate white wedding gown with pink ruffles and a tiara.

💡Ursula was animated with six tentacles instead of eight to save on production budget and avoid animation complexity.
💡Voice actress Pat Carroll envisioned Ursula as a mix of a Shakespearean actress and a slick used-car salesman.
💡Early concept art considered making Ursula a rockfish, lionfish, or sea snake before animators watched an octopus documentary.
💡In Hans Christian Andersen's original fairytale, the sea witch was a neutral figure rather than an evil antagonist.
💡The 2007 Broadway musical adaptation altered her backstory to establish that Ursula and King Triton are brother and sister.
