Gandalf the White is the resurrected and empowered form of the Istari wizard Gandalf, sent back to Middle-earth by Eru Ilúvatar after dying in battle against the Balrog atop Zirakzigil. Ascending as the leader of the Order of Wizards to replace the fallen Saruman, he provides crucial spiritual and military guidance to the Free Peoples during the final stages of the War of the Ring.
La Scena
This appearance represents the dramatic return of the wizard following his mortal duel against Durin's Bane atop the peak of Zirakzigil. Returned to life and enhanced by Eru Ilúvatar to complete his mission, Gandalf re-emerges in Fangorn Forest, where he reveals his transformed persona to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. Clothed in radiant garments given to him by Galadriel in Lothlórien, he travels to Edoras to break Saruman's hold on King Théoden, leads the heroic turn at Helm's Deep, organizes the defense of Minas Tirith, confronts the Witch-king of Angmar, stands with the armies of the West at the Black Gate, crowns King Elessar, and ultimately sails into the West from the Grey Havens.
Significato
Gandalf's rebirth as Gandalf the White is a turning point in the War of the Ring. Following the treason and moral downfall of Saruman, the Order of Wizards and the White Council were left without a true leader. By returning with authority and heightened power granted directly by Eru Ilúvatar, Gandalf officially assumes Saruman's former title and role. Moving away from his past as the wandering counselor 'The Grey Pilgrim,' he becomes a formidable military commander and catalyst for resistance, driving out Saruman's influence in Rohan and rallying the kingdoms of Men against Sauron's overwhelming forces.
Design
In this empowered form, Gandalf trades his faded, ash-grey robes for brilliant white garments gifted to him by Galadriel in Lothlórien. He carries a tall, elegantly carved white wizard's staff alongside his classic Elven blade, Glamdring. Framed by long, radiant white hair and a matching beard, his countenance is visibly sharper, more commanding, and authoritative than before. Completing his iconic presentation, Gandalf rides Shadowfax—the chief of the noble meharas horses—without a saddle or bridle.
