Biografia
Glamdring is a legendary Elven sword that serves as one of Gandalf's primary weapons alongside his wizard staff throughout J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth saga. Discovered in T.A.
2941 by Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, and Bilbo Baggins inside a troll cave in Eriador, the ancient blade becomes the Wizard's central weapon across his greatest journeys and battles. With Glamdring in hand, Gandalf slays the Great Goblin in Goblin-town and routs the Orc forces of the Misty Mountains.
During the War of the Ring, Gandalf wields the blade through the Mines of Moria and uses it to pierce the flesh of Durin's Bane, ultimately slaying the Balrog atop Zirakzigil. As Gandalf the White, he continues to bear Glamdring through major conflicts, including the Battle of Helm's Deep, the siege of Minas Tirith at Pelennor Fields, and the final confrontation at the Black Gate. At the end of the Third Age in T.A. 3021, Glamdring remains in Gandalf's possession when he departs Middle-earth for the Undying Lands via the Grey Havens.
Storia
Forged during the First Age by High-Elven smiths in the hidden kingdom of Gondolin, Glamdring was originally crafted for King Turgon, High King of the Noldor. Turgon wielded the sword during the Battle of Unnumbered Tears (Nírnaeth Arnoediad) and in defense of his city during the Fall of Gondolin in F.A. 510.
The weapon inspired such terror among Orcs that memory of its power persisted for millennia. Following Turgon's death and the fall of Gondolin, Glamdring went missing for over six thousand years, surviving the cataclysmic War of Wrath without being destroyed. In T.A.
2941, it re-emerged when found in a lair belonging to three stone-trolls named Tom, Bert, and William in Eriador. Upon reaching Rivendell, Lord Elrond examined the blade and read its ancient Elvish runes. Elrond revealed its name as Glamdring, translated as 'Foe-hammer' in Westron, and identified it as the lost sword once worn by the King of Gondolin.

Evoluzione
Conceived by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit (1937) as an enchanted glowing blade from fairytale lore, Glamdring evolved into a foundational piece of Middle-earth history in The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. Its background was expanded with Quenya etymology ('Foe-hammer') and connections to the First Age kingdom of Gondolin.
When adapted for live-action cinema, designer Richard Taylor and Weta Workshop reimagined Glamdring with a distinct leaf-shaped steel blade, custom crossguard, and Elven Cirth rune engravings. While Tolkien described the blade as glowing pale or blue when Orcs were near, Peter Jackson's film trilogy omitted this visual glow for Glamdring, instead portraying it as a lightning conductor used by Gandalf against the Balrog. In modern pop culture, Glamdring's legacy has expanded from literature and film into interactive media. It has evolved into a strategic Legendary Artifact card in trading card games like Magic: The Gathering (2023) and an iconic collectible replica.
