The Koopa Paratroopa (winged Koopa Troopa, or Para-Koopa) is an iconic recurring enemy and spin-off character in Nintendo's Super Mario franchise. Characterized by white wings attached to their tortoise-like shells, they bounce or fly through levels, serving as airborne hazards, stepping stones across large chasms, and versatile roster characters throughout Mario history.

La Scena

In its classic platforming appearances originating in World 1-3 (Red) and World 2-1 (Green) of Super Mario Bros., the Koopa Paratroopa establishes the franchise's signature midair challenge. Red Paratroopas hover vertically or horizontally along fixed patrol lines, while Green Paratroopas continuously bounce across platforms or fly in linear trajectories. Gamers frequently encounter rows of Paratroopas aligned above vast abysses, requiring Mario and Luigi to leap across successive shells in midair to cross gaps that exceed normal jumping distance. Landing a jump on a Paratroopa strips away its wings, causing it to fall to the ground as a standard Koopa Troopa.

Significato

The introduction of the Paratroopa in 1985 expanded platforming level design by transforming airborne enemies into dynamic stepping stones for player traversal. Beyond standard level geometry, the character inspired iconic franchise elements, such as the P-Wing power-up in Super Mario Bros. 3, which grants infinite flight in Raccoon form. Over decades, the Paratroopa evolved from a simple stage hazard into a recognizable sports and party roster contender—debuting as a playable character in Mario Tennis (2000) and Mario Kart: Double Dash!! (2003)—as well as providing memorable RPG partners like Parakarry in Paper Mario.

Design

Design

Visually, the Paratroopa shares the tortoise-like anatomical structure of the regular Koopa Troopa, distinguished primarily by a pair of white, feathered or feather-styled wings attached to its shell. Originally designed as a quadrupedal sprite in the 8-bit NES era, the Paratroopa transitioned into a bipedal stance wearing shoes starting with Super Mario World (1990). Shell coloration directly indicates behavior: red shells typically fly on set paths, green shells bounce or fly horizontally (and appeared teal underground in original NES palettes), and rare yellow shells walk and chase players. Wing length varies across games, featuring elongated wings in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Paper Mario, compared to shorter wing proportions in standard 2D and 3D platformers.
