Cruella De Vil's classic animated appearance, debuting in Disney's 1961 feature One Hundred and One Dalmatians, established an indelible villain archetype defined by her gaunt skeletal silhouette, half-black half-white hair, voluminous mink coat, and unhinged obsession with spotted fur. Animating every frame herself, Disney legend Marc Davis paired with voice actress Betty Lou Gerson to create a dramatic, manic fashion-obsessed heiress who remains one of animation history's most iconic antagonists.

La Scena

La Scena

Cruella De Vil makes her unforgettable entrance at the Radcliffe home, announced by the loud screech of her red sports car and leaving a foul-smelling cloud of green cigarette smoke behind her. She barges into the house unannounced, openly mocking Roger and Anita's home and Roger's songwriting career while demanding to see Perdita's upcoming puppies. Returning three weeks later right after the 15 Dalmatian puppies are born, she offers to buy them all immediately to fuel her passion for fur. When Roger defiantly stands his ground and refuses to sell—getting splattered along with Pongo by permanent ink from Cruella's pen in the process—Cruella flies into a manic rage, storms out of the house, and vows vengeance, initiating her scheme to steal the puppies.

Significato

Unlike earlier female Disney villains such as the Evil Queen, Lady Tremaine, or Maleficent, this classic animated version of Cruella possesses no magical powers nor quiet scheming patience. Instead, her threat stems from pure impulse, narcissism, raw greed, and explosive tantrums. Cruella is viewed as an invincible, terrifying figure by the Dalmatians, who cannot face 'that devil woman' directly and are forced to flee. Her plot to kidnap 99 puppies using crooks Horace and Jasper Badun drives the central conflict of the narrative, where her own unhinged ruthlessness and reckless driving ultimately bring about her dramatic downfall.

Design

Design

Cruella's visual design was developed by Bill Peet, Ken Anderson, and primary character animator Marc Davis, who juxtaposed a rail-thin, skeletal body against an oversized coat to reflect her larger-than-life personality. Her outfit consists of a simple black satin dress, long red opera gloves, black stockings, red high heels, turquoise earrings, and a matching turquoise ring. Over this, she wears a massive cream-colored mink coat lined with red satin—symbolizing her demonic nature—and featuring three large foxtails on the back. Her shoulder-length hair is split straight down the middle, half-black and half-white, and she is continuously holding a long green cigarette holder modeled after animator Marc Davis's own accessory.

💡Voice actress Betty Lou Gerson took inspiration from actress Tallulah Bankhead, whom original novel author Dodie Smith is said to have parodied when creating the character.
💡Marc Davis was the sole animator responsible for every single scene of Cruella De Vil in the original 1961 film.
💡Animator Milt Kahl initially disliked Cruella's design—complaining about her huge feet—but later told Marc Davis he would 'blow your Cruella off the screen' when animating Madame Medusa in The Rescuers.
