Cronologia
Biografia
Edward "Eddie" The Head (also known as Eddie the 'Ead) is the iconic zombified mascot of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden.
Serving as the band's visual identity since their 1980 debut, Eddie appears across nearly all of Iron Maiden's album covers, single artwork, concert stage sets, video games, and official merchandise.
Within the lore established across Iron Maiden's media, Eddie is a versatile cross-dimensional entity whose role continuously changes. He has been depicted as a slum murderer, a lobotomized mental patient, a British redcoat soldier, an Egyptian Pharaoh, a futuristic cyborg, an alien predator, a Mayan warrior, and a Japanese samurai. On stage during live concert tours, giant walking costumes and 30-foot animatronic stage rigs bring Eddie to life to battle band members in front of audiences worldwide.
Storia
Eddie's origins trace back to the late 1970s as a stage prop created by art student David Arthur Brown for Iron Maiden's lighting technician, Dave "Lights" Beazley. Mounted on the backdrop behind the drummer during early live shows, the papier-mâché head pumped fake blood and smoke through its mouth.
The nickname "Eddie the Head" was derived from a classic English joke about a couple who gave birth to just a head. In 1980, while preparing their debut studio album, Iron Maiden sought artwork and met artist Derek Riggs.
Riggs submitted an art piece originally created for a punk rock record featuring a gaunt, skeletal zombie under a yellow street lamp. The band approved the design with the addition of hair. To preserve his full reveal for the self-titled debut album, Eddie was initially shown only in shadow on the artwork for the "Running Free" single. Derek Riggs went on to paint all of Iron Maiden's album and single covers through 1992.

Evoluzione
Eddie's visual and thematic evolution mirrors Iron Maiden's musical trajectory. Starting in 1980 as a street-dwelling zombie punk on 'Iron Maiden' and a hatchet murderer on 'Killers', artist Derek Riggs expanded Eddie into grander fantasy realm concepts. By 1982's 'The Number of the Beast', Eddie achieved cosmic dominance by controlling the Devil, followed by a lobotomized asylum patient in 'Piece of Mind' (1983) and a majestic Egyptian Pharaoh monument in 'Powerslave' (1984).
In 1986's 'Somewhere in Time', Eddie entered sci-fi as a cyberpunk cyborg armed with a laser pistol, before turning into a surreal floating torso on 'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son' (1988). The 1990s and 2000s saw new artists contribute to his design: Melvyn Grant depicted Eddie as a moonlit tree monster on 'Fear of the Dark' (1992) and an alien predator on 'The Final Frontier' (2010), while Hugh Syme created a 3D anatomical rendering for 'The X Factor' (1995). Modern eras created by Mark Wilkinson include an ancient Mayan warrior for 'The Book of Souls' (2015) and a fully armored samurai wielding a katana for 'Senjutsu' (2021).
Da Collezione
For heavy metal collectors and pop-culture enthusiasts, Eddie represents one of the most sought-after characters in music merchandise. A crown jewel of physical collecting is the official 2018 'Stern Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast' arcade pinball machine, designed with custom artwork and game modes centered around Eddie's distinct album guises.
In addition to physical pinball machines, Eddie's legacy spans high-end graphic novel anthologies from Z2 Comics, Heavy Metal Publishing, and hardcover collector books from Fantoons such as 'Where Is Eddie?'. Gamers and digital collectors also seek out official crossover items, most notably the March 2024 'Dead by Daylight' Legendary cosmetic skins bringing Samurai, Pharaoh, Cyborg, and Trooper Eddies into asymmetric horror gaming.
