Jonathan 'Johnny' Storm, widely known as the Human Torch, is a founding member of Marvel's Fantastic Four created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1961. While classically celebrated as a heroic, hot-headed defender of Earth, alternate reality versions—such as Earth-65's TV star turned tyrannical oppressor—reveal a sinister, destructive side to his fiery persona.

La Scena

On Earth-65, Jonathan 'Johnny' Storm appears as a charismatic star in the Fantastic Four television series alongside his sister, Susan. Underneath their polished public facade, the siblings hide a sinister reality, having burned their mother's body following her murder. Johnny and Sue initially reach out to Ghost-Spider (Gwen Stacy) via a friendly recruitment video, presenting themselves as eager collaborators seeking a partnership. When they meet Ghost-Spider in person, Johnny puts on a cocky and playful show, igniting his body in flames and boasting about his catchphrases during a city patrol. However, his reckless nature quickly emerges as he blasts criminals with lethal fire despite Gwen's explicit warnings. The tension escalates the next day when Sue demands that Ghost-Spider leave New York, declaring that she and Johnny are now the city's rightful rulers. When Gwen refuses, Sue traps her in an airless bubble to suffocate her. Although Johnny protests Sue's broken promise not to kill Gwen, he subsequently convinces his sister to offer Ghost-Spider a chance to join their villainous regime. Ultimately, they coerce Gwen with threats against her father and doctored media footage, forcing her to flee Earth-65 and exile herself to Earth-616.

Significato

This storyline provides a stark subversion of Johnny Storm's traditionally heroic Earth-616 persona, reimagining the Human Torch as a dark, villainous force on Earth-65. Rather than serving as a selfless protector, Johnny uses his celebrity status and destructive powers to usurp control over New York City alongside his sister Sue. His complicity in burning his mother's corpse and his violent, unrestrained attacks on criminals demonstrate the deeply corrupted nature of Earth-65's Fantastic Four. Furthermore, this interaction serves as a critical catalyst in the wider Marvel multiverse narrative. By trapping Ghost-Spider and blackmailing her with doctored video footage framing her for crimes and threatening her father, Johnny and Sue force Gwen Stacy to abandon her home dimension. This pivotal confrontation leads directly to Ghost-Spider's exile to Earth-616, fundamentally altering the trajectory of Gwen Stacy's story and establishing Earth-65's Storm siblings as formidable multiversal antagonists.

Design

Unlike the main Earth-616 version of the character whose powers were derived from cosmic radiation during a spaceflight, Earth-65 Johnny Storm acquired his superhuman abilities through experiments conducted by Doctor Doom. His aesthetic combines the flashy appeal of a popular television star with terrifying pyrokinetic force. In combat and on patrol, Johnny shows off by surrounding his body in bright plasma, generating intense flames at will, and taking flight using pyrokinetic propulsion. His visual presentation emphasizes a cocky, theatrical flair, complete with flashy demonstrations of his powers and trademark hero catchphrases. Beneath this energetic, flaming spectacle lies a lethal capability, allowing him to launch destructive fire blasts that incinerate targets without restraint, contrasting sharply with traditional superhero suit designs through his dual identity as both a polished media figure and a ruthless oppressor.
