The Joker (Batman ’66) represents the iconic live-action and expanded-universe depiction of DC Comics' Clown Prince of Crime, originating in the 1966–1968 Batman television series and feature film. Portrayed by veteran actor Cesar Romero and later voiced by Jeff Bergman in animated continuations, this version is celebrated for his vibrant magenta suit, theatrical gimmicks, shrieking laugh, and famously visible mustache beneath white face paint.

La Scena

La Scena

This appearance represents the theatrical, lighthearted criminal mastermind of Gotham City from the classic 1966 live-action TV series, feature film, and comic continuation universe. Whether organizing the United Underworld alongside The Penguin, Catwoman, and The Riddler to dehydrate the Security Council, staging high-stakes robberies at opera performances, or challenging Batman to a surfing contest in 'Surf's Up! Joker's Under!', this Joker treats high crime as a flamboyant theatrical performance. Instead of fatal violence, he employs comical yet dangerous gadgets like paralyzing gas corks, sneezing powder, exploding joy buzzers, remote-controlled rigged vending machines, and elaborate death traps such as the Electric Chair Fruit Machine combo.

Significato

Cesar Romero's portrayal of the Joker in 1966 marks the character's historic debut in non-comics media, establishing the benchmark for all future screen depictions of Batman's arch-nemesis. Romero infused the character with boundless energy, a piercing gaze, and a iconic cackle, transforming a comic book rogue into a pop-culture phenomenon. The legacy of this incarnation spans decades, inspiring comic continuations like the Batman '66 series, crossovers with franchises like The Green Hornet, Wonder Woman '77, and Archie, as well as classic animated feature films like Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders.

Design

Design

Visually unmissable, the '66 Joker wears a tailored bright magenta/pink tailcoat suit accompanied by a lime-green vest, light shirt, and black string tie, occasionally wearing a pink domino mask during major capers. In-house cosmetologist Ben Nye Sr. formatted the character's chalk-white skin makeup; however, because Cesar Romero famously refused to shave his signature mustache, white greasepaint was applied directly over it, leaving his facial hair conspicuously visible under set lights. His aesthetic is completed with a bright green wig glued to his forehead and a trick squirting flower pinned to his jacket lapel.
