Cronologia
Panoramica
The Warhammer 40,000 action figure line is produced by McFarlane Toys under official license from Games Workshop, debuting in 2020.
Designed to translate the rich 41st millennium grimdark universe from tabletop miniatures into large-scale collectibles, the line predominantly features a 7-inch scale (approximately 1:10 scale), alongside oversized characters categorized under the 'Megafig' sub-line standing over 8.5 inches tall.
Positioned as an accessible yet high-fidelity bridge between tabletop wargaming enthusiasts and action figure collectors, the line covers key factions from the lore, including the Adeptus Astartes (Space Marines), Astra Militarum, Adepta Sororitas, Chaos Space Marines, and alien Xenos forces such as Necrons, Orks, and Tyranids. A signature defining element of McFarlane's release strategy is the unpainted 'Artist’s Proof' edition, released alongside fully prepainted figures to allow miniature painters to customize 7-inch figures using standard Citadel or acrylic paints.
Storia
The Warhammer 40,000 franchise began in 1987 as a tabletop miniature wargame created by Rick Priestley for Games Workshop, starting with 'Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader'. Over decades, it expanded into novels through the Black Library, video games, and animated media.
In 2020, Games Workshop partnered with McFarlane Toys to produce an official line of detailed 7-inch action figures. The line debuted with the Ultramarines Primaris Assault Intercessor Sergeant and the Necron Warrior.
In 2021, McFarlane expanded the line to include the Blood Angels, Adepta Sororitas, and Orks, alongside the introduction of oversized 'Megafigs' like the Ork Big Mek. The line continued evolving in 2022 with Chaos Space Marines, Dark Angels, and dedicated video game tie-in releases for 'Warhammer 40,000: Darktide'. By 2023, heavy armor Megafigs such as Space Marine Terminators were introduced. In 2024 and beyond, the line deepened its multimedia ties with figures based on 'Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2' (featuring Lieutenant Demetrian Titus) and classic video game franchises like 'Dawn of War'.

Collezionismo
Collecting the McFarlane Toys Warhammer 40,000 line provides a distinct bridge between traditional action figure display and tabletop miniature painting. Because these figures stand at 7 inches with up to 22 points of articulation, they allow fans to display imposing warriors like Space Marines, Imperial Commissars, and Chaos Berzerkers at a scale never possible on the gaming table.
The primary driver of collector interest comes from the unpainted 'Artist’s Proof' variants, which give hobbyists a 1:10 scale canvas to apply custom chapter paint schemes using standard acrylic or Citadel paints. Value trends on the secondary market favor oversized Megafigs—such as the Ork Big Mek and Ogryn—as well as specialized chapter variants and direct video game tie-ins like Lieutenant Demetrian Titus from 'Space Marine 2'. As Warhammer 40,000 continues to expand into mainstream film and television via Amazon MGM Studios, interest in McFarlane's action figure line remains high among both lore enthusiasts and action figure collectors.
Curiosità
• The 'Artist's Proof' variants were specifically designed by McFarlane Toys to cater to tabletop miniature painters who wanted to paint 7-inch scale figures using standard Citadel paints.
• McFarlane's 'Megafig' class figures are scaled at 8.5+ inches to maintain accurate height proportions against standard 7-inch Space Marines. • The 2024 Lieutenant Demetrian Titus action figure was created as a direct cross-promotional tie-in for the video game 'Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2'. • The fan-made short film series 'Astartes' created by Syama Pedersen was so popular that Games Workshop officially acquired it and declared it canon in 2021.
