Cronologia
Panoramica
Sonic the Hedgehog is a world-renowned media franchise created in 1991 by Japanese game developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega.
Conceived as a high-speed mascot to replace Alex Kidd and challenge Nintendo's dominance, Sonic quickly grew into a multi-billion-dollar global transmedia brand.
Over its 35-year history, the ecosystem has expanded well beyond its platforming origins into open-zone 3D titles, over a dozen animated television and web series, long-running comic book universes, and a blockbuster live-action cinematic universe produced by Paramount Pictures that has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office. Supported by active physical media releases, high-profile gaming crossovers, and extensive collectible lines, Sonic remains a crown jewel of pop culture.
Origini
The franchise began in the late 1980s as Sega sought a flagship character to spearhead its 16-bit Mega Drive/Genesis console. Development team Sonic Team created the iconic fast blue hedgehog, debuting the flagship title Sonic the Hedgehog in 1991.
To maximize global reach across all active hardware, Sega also commissioned an 8-bit version for the Master System and Game Gear handheld.
Because porting the 16-bit hardware directly proved impossible, freelance composer Yuzo Koshiro formed a new studio named Ancient with his family to build the 8-bit game from scratch. Featuring unique levels like Bridge Zone and Jungle Zone alongside iconic tracks, this parallel release demonstrated Sonic's versatility, cementing the character as Sega's permanent global mascot.

Collezionismo
From retro gaming enthusiasts to modern statue collectors, the Sonic collectible market offers immense depth and value. Sealed original Sega Genesis, Master System, Sega CD, and Game Gear cartridges serve as prized centerpieces for physical game collectors.
On the merchandise front, major licensing collaborations continually elevate secondary market demand, such as the LEGO x SEGA Mega Drive retro building set launched in May 2026 featuring hidden Sonic Easter eggs. Physical software collections—including the 35th Anniversary Classic and Modern Sonic Collections—remain high-priority pickups for completionists. Additionally, long-running print runs like Archie Comics' record-breaking 290-issue series, high-end statues of iconic rivals like Shadow and Metal Sonic, and live-action movie memorabilia continue to drive vibrant trade among dedicated fans.
