Cronologia
Panoramica
Created by writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson, the Bill & Ted franchise began with the theatrical release of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure in 1989 (filmed in 1987). The media universe centers on two dim-witted yet lovable high school metalheads from San Dimas, California—Bill S. Preston, Esq.
and Ted "Theodore" Logan—who travel through time and space using a futuristic telephone booth to pass their history class, save the universe, and ultimately establish a utopian society through their band, Wyld Stallyns.
Across its history, the franchise encompasses three feature films released in 1989, 1991, and 2020, as well as two animated TV series seasons (1990–1991), a short-lived 1992 live-action television series, a 1998 stage musical, and an impressive library of comic books and video games. It also spawned a 26-season live stage show at Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights and even a breakfast cereal. In 2024, star Alex Winter confirmed that a fourth film concept was actively being developed by the original creators and cast.
Origini
The characters of Bill and Ted originated in 1983 when writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon played them in improv theater as an idealized reflection of their own friendship. Originally conceived as a trio alongside a third character named Bob, the duo was refined for the big screen.
In early drafts of the script, their mentor Rufus was a 28-year-old, and their initial journey plucked historical figures like Charlemagne, Babe Ruth, and a medieval peasant named "John the Serf." The original script also concluded with an in-classroom oral presentation.
Notably, the time machine was originally planned to be a 1969 Chevrolet van, but the creators changed it to a 1960s American telephone booth to avoid drawing direct comparisons to the DeLorean time machine in the Back to the Future trilogy. Filmed primarily in Scottsdale and Mesa, Arizona in 1987, the movie suffered delays due to the bankruptcy of distributor De Laurentiis Entertainment Group before finally reaching theaters in February 1989 via Nelson Entertainment and Orion Pictures.

Collezionismo
For pop culture and retro gaming collectors, Bill & Ted offers a rich array of vintage and modern physical media and memorabilia. Early collectibles include the original 1989 graphic adventure PC releases for MS-DOS, Amiga, and Commodore 64, as well as late-80s and early-90s console games published by LJN for the NES and Game Boy, and Atari for the Atari Lynx.
Vintage physical items like Ralston's 1990 Bill & Ted's Excellent Cereal boxes and Nintendo Power magazine issues remain popular nostalgia pieces—most notably remembering the legendary 1991 contest where Nintendo Power gave away an actual screen-used telephone booth time machine to a young winner in Mississippi. Comic book collectors hunt for Marvel Comics' 12-issue run of Bill & Ted's Excellent Comic Book by Evan Dorkin (nominated for an Eisner Award in 1992) alongside modern miniseries from BOOM! Studios. Physical preservation reached new heights in 2023 when Limited Run Games published Bill & Ted's Retro Collection, releasing physical editions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 to preserve the 8-bit era titles for modern enthusiasts.
