Cronologia
Biografia
Yami Yugi, whose true identity is Pharaoh Atem, is the central hero of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. Three thousand years ago (5,000 years in the 4Kids English anime adaptation), Pharaoh Atem sacrificed his life to seal his spirit alongside the dark deity Zorc Necrophades inside the Millennium Puzzle.
When 16-year-old Yugi Muto solved the puzzle in modern times, Atem's spirit awakened inside Yugi's body, existing as a co-inhabitant known as "Yami Yugi" or "the other Yugi." Initially missing his ancient memories, Yami Yugi serves as Yugi's protective alter ego and a master of all games.
While Yugi brings compassion and kindness, Yami contributes ancient wisdom, tactical brilliance, and formidable gaming skill—most famously in Duel Monsters. Together, they form a deep bond as partners, competing in high-stakes tournaments like Duelist Kingdom and Battle City while uncovering the Pharaoh's forgotten past.
Storia
The origins of Yami Yugi stretch back three millennia to ancient Egypt, where Pharaoh Atem ruled until the evil entity Zorc Necrophades threatened world destruction. Atem sacrificed his life and used his true name as a spell to seal both Zorc's soul and his own into the Millennium Puzzle.
Following the sacrifice, Priest Seto shattered the Millennium Puzzle and laid it to rest inside Atem's royal tomb. 3,000 years later (5,000 in the English dub), explorer Solomon Muto discovered the Millennium Puzzle in Egypt.
After surviving an attempt on his life by a treacherous guide, Solomon was rescued by Atem's spirit and brought the Puzzle home. Solomon's grandson, Yugi Muto, successfully reassembled the complex artifact, awakening Atem's spirit. Unable to remember his name or past, Atem resided within Yugi, earning the name "Yami Yugi" as he began his journey to retrieve his lost memories.

Evoluzione
Yami Yugi undergoes major character growth throughout his story. In the early manga and "Season 0" anime, he emerges as "Dark Yugi"—a harsh, vigilante spirit who inflicts severe Penalty Games on criminals and bullies who harm Yugi or his friends. While his acts brought justice, his brutal methods initially alarmed Yugi. Through his bond with Yugi, Joey, Téa, and Tristan, Yami evolves into a compassionate, honor-bound champion who realizes that kindness is the ultimate strength.
His arc also involves overcoming his excessive pride and fear of losing. In his duel against Rafael, Yami gave in to desperation and activated the corrupting Seal of Orichalcos, which resulted in a crushing defeat and the loss of Yugi's soul. Devastated by guilt, Yami conquered his inner darkness, learned humility, and came to accept loss as a necessary part of growth. This culminated in the Ceremonial Battle, where he accepted defeat by Yugi as proof of his partner's strength and moved on to the afterlife.

Capsule Monsters. For video game collectors, retro game preservation saw a major milestone with the 2025 release of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection on Switch and Steam, bundling 14 classic handheld games starring Yami Yugi.
