Cronologia
Biografia
Yamcha is a primary character throughout the Dragon Ball series, starting his journey as a rogue desert bandit alongside his companion Puar before becoming a dedicated martial artist and defender of Earth.
After meeting Son Goku and Bulma in the Diablo Desert, Yamcha overcomes his initial role as an antagonist and joins the group, training under Master Roshi and later King Kai to confront various planetary threats including the Red Ribbon Army, the Saiyans, and the Androids.
In live-action adaptations, Yamcha was portrayed by Cheng Tung-Chuen (under the character name Westwood) in the 1990 Taiwanese film Dragon Ball, and by Korean-American actor Joon Park in the 2009 Hollywood adaptation Dragonball Evolution. In Japanese media, he was originally voiced by Tōru Furuya from 1986 until mid-2024, when voice actor Ryōta Suzuki took over the role. In English releases, he is voiced by Christopher Sabat.
Storia
Yamcha's origins trace back to the Diablo Desert, where he lived as an infamous bandit operating alongside his shapeshifting partner, Puar.
Debuting in Chapter 7 of the manga ("Yamcha and Puar"), he ambushed Goku, Bulma, and Oolong to steal their Dragon Balls and resources.
Despite his martial skill, Yamcha possessed severe gynophobia—an extreme shyness around women—which incapacitated him whenever he came near Bulma. He initially sought the Dragon Balls to wish away his fear, but eventually overcame it naturally by forming a romantic relationship with Bulma and joining Goku's team of allies.

Evoluzione
Yamcha undergoes a notable progression throughout the franchise. Starting as an antisocial desert bandit paralyzed by gynophobia, his early arc focuses on personal growth, overcoming his fear of women, and committing to formal martial arts under Master Roshi. During Dragon Ball Z, Yamcha stands on the frontlines against galactic threats.
However, his death at the hands of a self-destructing Saibaman created a permanent pop-culture meme and marked a shift in his combat role. After being impaled by Dr. Gero during the Android Saga, Yamcha steps back from main frontline battles, recognizing he has been outclassed by the Saiyans. In Dragon Ball Super, he primarily embraces a comedic role—playing baseball and spectating—though he steps up to fight Moro's escaped convicts on Earth when called upon.

In digital collectibles and modern gaming, Yamcha remains a popular mainstay across mobile titles such as Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle and Dragon Ball Legends, as well as major console releases like Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero.
