Biography

King Namor McKenzie, also known as the Sub-Mariner, is the monarch of Atlantis and one of the oldest super-powered beings in Marvel history.

Born as a mutant hybrid to human ship captain Leonard McKenzie and Atlantean Princess Fen, Namor's true loyalties rest unconditionally with his ocean kingdom and its people.

His fierce dedication to protecting his realm has positioned him as both a formidable threat to surface dwellers and one of Earth's most courageous defenders. Throughout his long history, Namor has fought alongside prominent superhero teams, serving as a key member of the Invaders during World War II, the Defenders, the Avengers, and the X-Men. He is also a founding member of Marvel's secret Illuminati council and served in Norman Osborn's Cabal. Driven by royal pride, a volatile temper, and unmatched battle prowess, Namor remains an uncompromising sovereign who will stop at nothing to protect the ocean depths.

LO SAPEVI?Namor is recognized as comic book history's first true antihero, debuting in 1939.

Origins & Backstory

In 1915, Captain Leonard McKenzie sailed aboard the Endurance on an expedition to the Antarctic attempting to recover vibranium. There he met Princess Fen, sent by her father Emperor Thakorr to investigate explosions near the surface. The two fell in love, resulting in Fen becoming pregnant with Namor, whose name translates to 'Avenging Son'.

Before the child was born, an attack by Atlantean soldiers separated the couple, and Fen returned to Atlantis believing McKenzie was dead. Namor grew up in the Atlantean royal court under the tutelage of scholars alongside his cousins Dorma, Namora, and Byrrah.

In the late 1930s, Namor investigated surface divers who turned out to be Nazis, prompting him to join the Allies in World War II alongside Captain America and the android Human Torch. Following the war, Atlantis suffered catastrophic earthquakes triggered by Paul Destine using Set's Serpent Crown. The attack killed King Thakorr and Princess Fen and left Namor an amnesiac. He lived for decades as a vagrant on the streets of New York City until Johnny Storm discovered him in a flophouse and restored his memories by tossing him into the river.

LO SAPEVI?His name, Namor, translates literally to 'Avenging Son' in the Atlantean language.

Character Evolution

Created by Bill Everett in 1939 for Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1 and Marvel Comics #1, Namor introduced the concept of the comic book antihero. In the 1940s Golden Age, he evolved from a hostile force against surface dwellers into a hero fighting alongside Captain America and the Human Torch in the Invaders. After fading from publication in the late 1950s, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby reintroduced him in 1962's Fantastic Four #4, reinventing him as a hot-tempered sovereign seeking retribution for his destroyed kingdom.

Throughout the Bronze and Modern ages, Namor expanded his presence across Marvel's political landscape. He co-founded the Defenders in 1971, joined the Avengers in 1985, and starred in John Byrne's 62-issue run Namor, the Sub-Mariner in the 1990s. In the 2000s, he became a charter member of Marvel's Illuminati council and joined Norman Osborn's Cabal during Dark Reign. He later aligned with the X-Men as a prominent mutant leader, receiving a portion of the Phoenix Force during Avengers vs. X-Men (2012). In 2022, his lore evolved on screen in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, reimagining his home as the ancient underwater Mesoamerican civilization of Talokan.

Collecting & Merchandise

For comic book collectors, Namor key issues represent some of the most historic grails in the medium. His public premiere in Marvel Comics #1 (1939) and his Silver Age re-emergence in Fantastic Four #4 (1962) stand as cornerstone key issues.

His solo ongoing titles, including the 1968 Sub-Mariner run and John Byrne's 1990 series Namor, the Sub-Mariner, remain popular targets for comic archivists, alongside recent standalone runs like Jason Aaron's 2024 Namor series. In modern digital media, Namor maintains a strong footprint as a strategic card character in Marvel Snap and a main class hero in Marvel Rivals. His live-action cinematic portrayal in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever brought a massive wave of new action figures and statues showcasing Tenoch Huerta's K'uk'ulkan design alongside traditional comic-style Atlantean figures produced across major collectible lines.
