Biography

Princess Jasmine is the daughter of the Sultan of Agrabah and his late wife, residing in Agrabah's royal palace alongside her loyal pet tiger, Rajah.

Resenting the strict traditions that confine her to the palace walls and demand she marry a royal prince for political gain, Jasmine rebels against her sheltered existence.

Driven by a desire for freedom, she disguises herself as a commoner and sneaks into the Agrabah marketplace, where she meets the street thief Aladdin. Assertive and outspoken, Jasmine refuses to be treated as a prize to be won. When the villainous Grand Vizier Jafar attempts to usurp the throne, Jasmine plays a vital role in defeating him alongside Aladdin, the Genie, Abu, and Carpet. Following the abolition of the kingdom's outdated marriage laws, Jasmine steps into her role as a leader, governing Agrabah alongside her father as a progressive advocate for her community before eventually marrying Aladdin.

LO SAPEVI?In Howard Ashman's original 1988 treatment, Jasmine was a spoiled comic-relief character who arrogantly sang 'Call Me A Princess'.

Backstory

Jasmine spent her childhood sheltered entirely within the palace walls of Agrabah due to her status as a princess.

Restricted from socializing with her subjects or making real friends, her youth was defined by loneliness and isolation.

Her primary companion was her pet tiger Rajah, whom she found years before the events of the film and believed to be a spiritual gift from her late mother, who used to tell her stories about the 'star tiger'. Whenever Jasmine missed her mother, she would sit on her balcony and stargaze, and as a child, she built sandcastles in a special palace garden created by her father.

LO SAPEVI?Jasmine is the first official Disney Princess of Middle Eastern descent.

Evolution

Jasmine's character underwent significant transformation during the development of the 1992 animated film. In Howard Ashman's original 1988 treatment, Jasmine was envisioned as a spoiled, shallow, comic-relief princess with a song titled 'Call Me A Princess,' while Aladdin's true love interest was a street urchin named Abbi. When screenwriters revised the script, Abbi was cut and Jasmine was overhauled into an endearing, strong-willed heroine.

Her human handmaiden was replaced by the pet tiger Rajah to better suit animation, and Jeffrey Katzenberg requested her character be made stronger alongside an aged-up Aladdin. Over the course of the franchise, Jasmine's role expanded from rebelling against marriage laws to actively participating in Agrabah's political governance. This evolution culminated in the 2019 live-action reimagining portrayed by Naomi Scott, where Jasmine's arc focuses directly on her ambition to become the ruling Sultana of Agrabah in her own right.
