Panoramica

Founded in 1999 by Steve Geppi under Diamond Comic Distributors—a key division of Geppi Family Enterprises—Diamond Select Toys and Collectibles, LLC (DST) established its headquarters in Timonium/Hunt Valley, Maryland.

From its inception, DST carved out a distinct niche in the toy industry by creating high-quality action figures, statues, prop replicas, and specialty items targeted specifically at adult collectors and comic book enthusiasts. Rather than focusing primarily on mass-market retail, the company distributed its releases mainly through comic shops and specialty retailers.

Over more than two decades, DST positioned itself as a major bridge between mass play-scale toys and high-end display collectibles, building an expansive portfolio across major entertainment properties in film, television, video games, and comic books. In May 2025, following Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings by parent company Diamond Comic Distributors, DST and its Gentle Giant Ltd. subsidiary were acquired for $7.5 million by Ad Populum, the parent company of NECA and Kidrobot. This transition resulted in the winding down of standalone operations in Maryland while DST's tooling, digital assets, and proprietary lines were integrated into Ad Populum's broader manufacturing structure.

Storia

Diamond Select Toys launched in 1999, rapidly expanding its offerings to meet the growing collector demand of the early 2000s. A major milestone arrived in 2002 with the debut of Marvel Select, a flagship 7-inch scale action figure line featuring elaborate custom diorama bases. In 2003, DST partnered to produce Minimates—2-inch block figures with interchangeable parts—eventually acquiring the brand outright in 2007.

Throughout the 2010s, DST broadened its format diversity with the introduction of Gallery PVC Dioramas, which delivered detailed 9-to-11-inch sculpted statue scenes at accessible price points, as well as the 1/2-scale resin bust line, Legends in 3-Dimensions (L3D).

In February 2019, DST executed a landmark acquisition by purchasing Gentle Giant Ltd., securing access to high-end 1/6-scale mini-busts, 12-inch retro jumbo figures, and advanced digital scanning assets. However, corporate restructuring struck in May 2025 when parent firm Diamond Comic Distributors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. DST and Gentle Giant were subsequently sold to Ad Populum for $7.5 million. Independent operations at the Timonium headquarters closed in mid-May 2025, bringing an end to DST's era as a standalone company while its digital library and product lines entered Ad Populum's holding portfolio.

Reputazione

Diamond Select Toys built a strong reputation among collectors by delivering highly detailed, adult-focused collectibles catered specifically to specialty retail outlets. Its flagship Marvel Select line gained widespread acclaim for pairing detailed 7-inch scale sculpting with elaborate diorama bases and character accessories, making them display-ready centerpieces.

Collectors also valued DST for filling niche product categories that larger mass-market toy companies often passed over, such as 1:1 scale electronic roleplay props (including Star Trek Phasers and Tricorders) and specialized build-a-diorama sets like the Ghostbusters rooftop pieces. The company's 2019 acquisition of Gentle Giant Ltd. further elevated its status in high-end collecting circles, adding premium 1/6-scale resin mini-busts and digital scanning assets to its capabilities. DST’s legacy items, unique formats like Minimates, and PVC dioramas remain actively sought after across secondary collector channels.

LO SAPEVI?In May 2025, DST and Gentle Giant were acquired by Ad Populum for $7.5 million following bankruptcy proceedings.
