Necron Flayed Ones are twisted, insane close-combat terror troops within the Warhammer 40,000 universe afflicted by the ancient Flayer Virus. Originating from the dying curse of the C'tan Llandu'gor the Flayer, these machine constructs are driven by an insatiable, phantom hunger to slaughter organic prey and drape themselves in the rotting skin and flesh of their victims.

La Scena

La Scena

Flayed Ones do not march into battle by order of Necron Overlords; instead, they burst unbidden directly onto the front lines from their ghastly pocket dimension. Stalking through shadows or ambushing enemy positions like heavy weapon emplacements, these stooped automatons arrive wreathed in the sickening stench of decaying flesh. As combat unfolds, they infiltrate opposing ranks with terrifying agility, using razor-sharp necrodermis flensing claws extending from their fingers to flay victims alive in mere solar seconds. Rather than pursuing fleeing foes or adhering to high-level strategic commands, Flayed Ones pause mid-slaughter to grotesquely smear blood and raw meat across their unmoving, toothless jaws. Blood dribbles down their steel necks and pools around stained necrodermis ribs while scraps of fresh hide hang loosely from their metal frames. Enemy combatants frequently lose their nerve upon witnessing the rotting remains of their former squadmates draped over these relentless, undying killing machines. Once the slaughter concludes, most surviving Flayed Ones vanish back into their dark sub-dimensional realm with fresh trophies.

Significato

The existence of Flayed Ones represents a terrifying, permanent psychological scar on Necron society stemming from the ancient War in Heaven. When the Necron race turned on their C'tan masters and utterly annihilated Llandu'gor the Flayer, the dying Star God cast an enduring curse that imparted an echo of its own bottomless hunger into their necrodermis shells. Because Necrons bartered away their biological bodies and souls for living metallic endoskeletons, their remaining sanity became vulnerable to this insidious infection. The curse spreads uncontrollably, eroding reason until a Necron succumbs to a phantom urge to feast on flesh that a mechanical construct can never digest. Shunned and feared by other Necrons who dread contracting the disease, Flayed Ones are routinely banished or executed after battles. Despite their outcast status, their sudden materialization provides an unbidden terror weapon for Necron commanders. Furthermore, their lore underpins horrific galactic regions like the Bone Kingdom of Drazak and drives major narratives, including the fall of the Maynarkh Dynasty and Prince Oltyx's fate in The Twice-Dead King series.

Design

Design

The visual design of a Flayed One is a macabre fusion of cold necromantic technology and visceral body horror. Their mechanical frames consist of thin, wiry necrodermis endoskeletons morphed into hunched, predatory postures. The living metal of their extremities reconfigures grotesquely under the Flayer Curse: their legs often grow an additional joint to enable hyper-agile or quadrupedal movement, while their fingers elongate into long, knife-like necrodermis blades capable of slicing through skin and heavy armor alike. What truly defines their aesthetic is their grisly trophy-wearing habit. Flayed Ones habitually drape their steel torsos with still-wet pieces of harvested organic skin, hides, Ork flesh, and bone remnants, occasionally wearing necklaces of human skulls. Because they lack functional digestive systems or olfactory senses, these bloody trophies remain attached to their frames until completely decayed. Modern plastic miniatures and digital depictions emphasize this nightmare aesthetic, featuring needle-like finger-scythes, exposed blood-stained ribs, and rotting hides stretched tightly over cold metal joints.

💡Unlike other C'tan who were merely shattered into shards, Llandu'gor the Flayer was completely destroyed by the Necrons, giving rise to his final revenge: the Flayer Curse.
💡The Bone Kingdom of Drazak in the Ghoul Stars is ruled by Valgûl, the Fallen Lord, who maintains his subjects' loyalty by organizing periodic "Times of Bounty" fleet raids for fresh blood.
💡Flayed Ones made their first major digital video game appearance in 2006's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War – Dark Crusade as morale-breaking infiltration troops.
💡Author Nate Crowley expanded the Flayer lore extensively in The Twice-Dead King duology, detailing how Necron noble Prince Oltyx succumbs to the curse and ascends Drazak's bone throne.
💡Llandu'gor the Flayer was the only C'tan star-god to be completely obliterated rather than broken into shards by the Necrons.
💡Even though their mechanical bodies cannot digest food, Flayed Ones continuously smear raw flesh across their metal jaws in a desperate attempt to satisfy phantom hunger.
💡Flayed Ones dwell in the Bone Kingdom of Drazak, a realm in the Ghoul Stars where streets are lit by cold, dying suns.
💡Necron Overlords routinely order surviving Flayed Ones executed after battles, but most slip back into their dark pocket dimension with new fleshy trophies.
