Cobra Commander (2020 Hasbro Retro figure)

The 2020 Hasbro Retro Collection figure captures Cobra Commander as he appeared during his grand debut era in the 1982–1983 G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero saga. It invokes the iconic image of Cobra's supreme leader addressing his legions or commanding covert operations against G.I. Joe from secret command posts. Clad in his classic military dress blue tunic, this figure represents the supreme dictator at the height of his authority, masked behind an enigmatic silver faceplate. Encased in packaging designed after the original vintage 1980s blister cards—complete with the trademark red explosion backdrop and vintage Hasbro branding—this appearance transports fans directly back to the dawn of the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra conflict. It captures the spirit of the early Marvel Comics series written by Larry Hama and the classic Sunbow animated cartoon miniseries where Cobra Commander first rallied his ruthless terrorist organization to threaten world security.

Cobra Commander's initial 1982 aesthetic established the visual identity and narrative blueprint for one of pop culture's most recognizable villains. Before later evolutions introduced armor, hooded masks, or serpentine origins, his silver faceplate and blue dress uniform were the definitive symbols of Cobra's global threat. The 2020 Retro Collection release is significant because it pays direct tribute to this foundational era, celebrating nearly four decades of G.I. Joe history. By preserving the classic 3.75-inch (1:18) scale and original design cues, this release serves as an essential bridge between 1980s nostalgia and modern collecting. It anchors the ongoing legacy of Cobra Commander—whose journey expanded across Marvel Comics, Sunbow television animation, IDW Publishing, and the Skybound Energon Universe—reminding fans of the timeless character concept that launched the entire franchise.

The design of the 2020 Retro figure faithfully replicates Cobra Commander's iconic 1982 uniform with enhanced modern sculpting. Standing at 3.75 inches tall, the figure wears a traditional military dress blue tunic trimmed with black details, a high collar, and a contrasting white belt. A bold red Cobra emblem is stamped on the left side of his chest, complemented by matte black gauntlets and black boots. The head sculpt is defined by a deep blue helmet dome fitted with a smooth, silver chrome-plated faceplate. For gear, the figure comes equipped with his signature 'hairdryer-style' Cobra laser pistol, a combat knife that stores inside a leg sheath, and a custom black backpack featuring a molded side holster designed to store his laser firearm.
