Disney's 1950 animated classic Cinderella introduced one of cinema's most iconic animated heroines, originally voiced by Ilene Woods. Produced as Walt Disney Animation Studios' 12th feature film, this appearance established Cinderella's enduring tale of hope, her animal companions Jaq and Gus, and her unforgettable silver ball gown transformation.

La Scena

La Scena

The 1950 animated film Cinderella depicts the story of a widowed aristocrat's gentle daughter who is forced into scullery servitude by her cruel stepmother, Lady Tremaine, and jealous stepsisters, Drizella and Anastasia. Despite her mistreatment, Cinderella maintains her gentle spirit and optimism, befriending the animals of the château, including mice Jaq and Gus, Bruno the dog, and Major the horse. The pivotal moment of this appearance occurs in the garden after her stepfamily viciously tears apart her mother's restored gown. Approaching despair, Cinderella is visited by her Fairy Godmother, who magically transforms a garden pumpkin into a coach, her animal friends into horses and servants, and gifts her a shimmering silver ball gown paired with glass slippers, sending her off to the royal ball before the magic expires at midnight.

Significato

This representation of Cinderella remains one of the most significant milestones in Disney animation history, rescuing Walt Disney Productions from post-war financial trouble upon its 1950 release. The story highlights a resilient heroine whose strength lies in her kindness, hope, and perseverance in the face of emotional abuse. Screenwriter Maurice Rapf pushed for Cinderella to be an active, headstrong character who earns her happiness rather than passively receiving it. Furthermore, the magic transformation sequence stands as a landmark artistic accomplishment that solidified the foundational fairytale aesthetic of Disney Studios.

Design

Design

Brought to life by iconic animator Marc Davis, Cinderella's design features distinct wardrobe transitions throughout the film. She begins in a brown scullery maid dress with an apron and white hair scarf. Her mice and bird friends later construct a pink and white ball gown using her late mother's dress, accented with Anastasia's discarded pink sash and Drizella's turquoise beads. Her definitive appearance is the magical ball gown created by the Fairy Godmother: a silvery-blue off-the-shoulder gown with puffed sleeves, opera-length white gloves, a black neck choker, a blue headband securing her blonde updo, and sparkling transparent glass slippers.

💡Work on an animated Cinderella adaptation began as early as Walt Disney's 1922 Laugh-O-Gram short and a canceled 1933 Silly Symphony concept before feature development commenced in 1938.
💡Early 1940 story treatments included abandoned characters such as Cinderella's pet turtle Clarissa, a cat named Bon Bon, a valet named Spink, and a dance instructor named Monsieur Carnewal.
💡A discarded 1944 draft featured a scene where Cinderella's stepmother sends her to a gypsy camp to sell her mother's jewelry, where she meets the Prince in disguise.
💡An alternate ending where the Prince finds Cinderella in her maid clothes at the castle was cut by Walt Disney for pacing, but the sequence was later incorporated into the video game Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
💡Animated by Marc Davis, the sequence where Cinderella's torn dress transforms into her silver ball gown was officially cited by Walt Disney as his favorite piece of animation ever created at the studio.
💡- Walt Disney stated that the transformation of Cinderella's torn dress into her ball gown was his single favorite piece of animation ever produced.
💡- Early unproduced script drafts from 1940 featured a pet turtle named Clarissa and a dance instructor named Monsieur Carnewal.
💡- An alternate ending cut by Walt Disney in 1947 was later adapted into the video game Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep.
💡- In the 2018 animated crossover film Ralph Breaks the Internet, Cinderella breaks her glass slipper to use as a defense weapon.
