Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film trilogy (2012–2014) represents the iconic screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved hobbit burglar. Portrayed primarily by Martin Freeman as a young adventurer and Sir Ian Holm as the elderly framing narrator, this version chronicles Bilbo's journey from Bag End to Erebor, his acquisition of the One Ring, and his pivotal role in Middle-earth history.

La Scena

La Scena

This incarnation depicts Bilbo Baggins throughout Peter Jackson's epic film trilogy: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). It captures Bilbo's transformation from a reluctant, comfortable homebody in Bag End into a key member of Thorin Oakenshield's company of thirteen dwarves. Crucial scenes represented by this version include the riddle game in the dark with Gollum beneath the Misty Mountains where Bilbo discovers the One Ring, his stealthy entry into the dragon Smaug's treasure chamber inside the Lonely Mountain, and his framing moments writing his memoirs 'There and Back Again' on his 111th birthday.

Bilbo's departure from the Shire marks the catalyst for the entire modern Third Age of Middle-earth. By taking up Gandalf's offer to serve as a burglar for Thorin's company, Bilbo establishes that courage and wisdom reside in the unlikeliest of creatures. His discovery of the One Ring during his riddle contest with Gollum directly initiates the grand narrative arc that leads to The Lord of the Rings. Furthermore, Bilbo's moral choices—such as showing mercy to Gollum and attempting to prevent war using the Arkenstone—redefine the destiny of Erebor and solidify his enduring bond with Gandalf and Frodo.

Visualized by Wētā Workshop and influenced by illustrator John Howe, Bilbo's costume reflects a classic Shire aesthetic adapted for wilderness travel. He wears a tailored burgundy velvet waistcoat, brass-buttoned tweed jacket, ochre-colored knee-breeches, and an olive travelling cloak. As his journey progresses, he wields Sting—an ancient Elven shortsword that glows blue near Orcs—and acquires a coat of finely forged Mithril mail armor gifted by Thorin. Custom prosthetic hobbit feet designed by Wētā give Bilbo his distinctive grounded silhouette.
