Translucent is a corrupt member of Vought International's elite superhero team, The Seven, whose skin can transform into a light-bending, bulletproof carbon metamaterial. Created specifically for Amazon Prime Video's television adaptation of The Boys, his capture and explosive demise at the hands of Hughie Campbell and Billy Butcher kickstarts the overarching conflict between The Boys and Vought.
La Scena
After discovering Hughie Campbell planting a bug at the Seven Tower, Translucent tracks Hughie down to his workplace. However, Billy Butcher ambushes the supe with Hughie's assistance, knocking him unconscious and locking him inside a custom electrified cage. Held prisoner while Frenchie attempts to breach his impervious diamond-hard exterior, Frenchie discovers that while Translucent's skin resists all outward physical trauma, his internal organs remain as vulnerable as an ordinary human's. To bypass his carbon skin, Frenchie electrocutes Translucent and plants an explosive C-4 device into his rectum. Translucent eventually short-circuits the cage and tries to manipulate Hughie into letting him walk free, warning him of the lifelong consequences of becoming a fugitive on the run. As Translucent attempts to step through the exit door, Hughie succumbs to his built-up rage and presses the detonator, blowing Translucent apart from the inside in a dramatic splatter of blood and nonflammable skin.
Significato
Translucent's death serves as the definitive point of no return for Hughie Campbell and the foundational catalyst for the entire narrative arc of The Boys. As the first member of The Seven ever killed by the group—and Hughie's very first kill—it proves to Billy Butcher and his team that Compound V-enhanced individuals are not truly invincible. The aftermath of his death forces Vought International into a massive corporate cover-up, hiding the truth of his vulnerability by staging a lavish public funeral where Homelander falsely blames his death on a supe-terrorist named El Diablo. Ultimately, his permanent removal from the roster leaves a vacant spot in The Seven, prompting CEO Stan Edgar to recruit Stormfront as his replacement and escalating the war between Vought and the vigilantes.
Design
Portrayed by actor Alex Hassell, Translucent's physical appearance relies heavily on the unique physics of his biological powers. His body re-orders its cellular structure into a compressed carbon metamaterial that bends light, rendering him entirely invisible to the naked eye while making his skin hard as diamonds and bulletproof. Because his power affects only his biological body and not synthetic materials or garments, any clothing he wears remains visible when his powers are active. Consequently, Translucent must strip completely naked to effectively vanish, displaying no self-consciousness when transitioning between states. In official Vought memorabilia, promotional material, and corporate films like Invisible Force, he is represented in standard superhero attire, yet his commemorative statue at Godolkin University humorously highlights his distinct aesthetic: only the base and commemorative plaque are visible to the public, leaving the statue itself completely unseen.
